As part of the requirements of the Ontario education system and the Peel District School Board, all students who are legal citizens of Ontario must complete 40 hours of volunteer work in a community service environment to qualify for a Secondary School Diploma.

The goal behind this is to encourage students to be actively involved in participating in positive contributions to their community, in addition to preparing them for a working environment where they will follow orders, be given tasks to complete, and follow timings accordingly.

Students are encouraged to complete these 40 hours of community service as early as possible – ideally by the time they finish the 10th grade. The Ontario Ministry of Education has set a standard of eligible and ineligible activities for this community involvement work, which are outlined on the Peel District School Board’s timekeeping record sheet.

MILC students who are 14 years of age or older can earn these hours of volunteer work by assisting teachers and staff at the school.
